Hope Does Not Equal Fear

I know I am ignorant when it comes to matters of national and international economy, but I simply do not understand how spending billions and even trillions of dollars that don’t actually exist will “save” our economy. I don’t understand how the government can prevent a depression by creating more debt when the struggles we are facing arise mostly from the effects of debt. I don’t understand why people who have spent more money than they had believe that doing more of the same will solve the problem. Isn’t that like Einstein’s definition of insanity?

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Is it just me or do the stimulus efforts just seem like a strategy to put off an inevitable correction to all of the unfettered spending we’ve done over the last several decades? Why do we trust our spending and policies to people who will do anything to stay in power, even if it means policies that delay difficulties just long enough to pass it on to the next generation? Did anyone notice that Bernie Madoff’s scheme was a private version of Social Security? Everyone was aghast at Madoff, but no one is questioning what our legislatures have been doing for years and we are looking to them to “solve” this economy?

I know that God doesn’t bring a spirit of fear, but one of love, power, and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7. Meanwhile, the main spirit I seem to be hearing from our governmental leaders is one of fear. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to follow anyone who uses fear as its motivator. Hope is a true message, but hope must be more than just words.

May the people of God rise up and pray with King David for our leaders and for the nations of the earth:

1 May the LORD answer you when you are in distress;
may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.

2 May he send you help from the sanctuary
and grant you support from Zion.

3 May he remember all your sacrifices
and accept your burnt offerings.
Selah

4 May he give you the desire of your heart
and make all your plans succeed.

5 We will shout for joy when you are victorious
and will lift up our banners in the name of our God.
May the LORD grant all your requests.

6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed;
he answers him from his holy heaven
with the saving power of his right hand.

7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.

8 They are brought to their knees and fall,
but we rise up and stand firm.

9 O LORD, save the king!
Answer us when we call!
