May 2008
What a terrific 5 days we (Tara and the children) had at Spring Harvest from April 24th – 29th. I, Tara, had the privilege of ministering to children with special needs in the 8-11 year old category. There was a team of 6 of us who helped with a dozen children who sometimes had difficulties following along with their team. I have never had the opportunity to love on special needs children in this way and it was fun! (I am finally learning that things that are truly enjoyable are those experiences that have eternal significance! And this was the cherry on top!)
This was at a holiday resort on the coast of England called Minehead. It was pretty, but still quite chilly. It was my first time to see the coast in 6 months of living in England. We had over 400, 8-11 year olds in our venue!! The King’s Kids team from this YWAM base led everything for this age. They began planning it out in December last year. It was topnotch!
The teaching, drama, worship band (from London school of Theology) and workshops were so interesting and kept the attention of all these children – I never heard anyone say “shhh.”I had a number of deep conversations with some of the higher level Autistic boys (Paul and Joseph) that I will treasure!
And I cannot go on without mentioning Lucy. Lucy is 13 and has Down’s syndrome. She was adorable with brown bobbed hair, cute little dimples and sparkling eyes. She wrote me notes everyday saying how much she loved me, that I was her best friend, and not to cry. She had many questions like “Does God love me even if I have Down’s syndrome?” What a blessing to get to spend time telling these children about the love of the Father!
I, Bryan, didn’t go to Spring Harvest because I was asked to do some lectures in our CDTS during the first week of the school. So, while Tara and the kids were having a fantastic time ministering and being ministered to, I was having a blast teaching. It really has been a few years since I regularly taught Sunday School, and it reminded me that God gifted me to teach His Word and His character. I felt quite at home. I definitely hope to do more teaching in the future.
We just learned we will be going to South Africa for outreach, which came as a surprise. We had already begun making plans to fly to China and the Philippines. We still aren’t sure why South Africa, but we know God has a plan. We will have opportunities to minister to a great number of impoverished communities, a prison, some sharecroppers and farmers, and that we hope to put together a meeting of all the local churches to discuss reconciliation and unity in Christ. South Africa is still greatly divided on language and racial lines, and the need for God’s message of relationship and reconciliation is great. We will also reconnect with some YWAM friends who live in South Africa. Finally, this gives us an opportunity to see the African continent and culture for the first time and learn a bit more about what kinds of ministry opportunities are there for future trips and plans.
Have you considered using this year’s tax rebates for missions? You can join us in South Africa at the end of June and beginning of July or at the end of July and into August – our last letter included a detailed pamphlet about it. Or, I’m sure there are a number of mission outreaches available through your church! Pray about it and go!
“This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: ‘In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.’” Isaiah 30:15. |

The Future of FJ Ministries |

Saturday, 27 September 2008 |
Two years ago my wife and I created this ministry, FJ Ministries, as a part of our becoming missionaries full-time. We left our jobs as a corporate attorney and occupational therapist and took the plunge, taking a Crossroads Discipleship Training School with YWAM at The King's Lodge, a YWAM base in England.
As we began our journey we prayed and asked God what FJ Ministries would do. He had already given us the name, which is another story (click here to read), and we knew He had a specific purpose in mind for us. His Word tells us that in Ephesians 2:10, and we were prepared to follow His direction and His path after spending too many years chasing our own dreams and seeing our best efforts crumble. We had seen how following our own way was destroying our marriage, impacting our children negatively, and leading us down paths we never dreamed we would follow. In spite of our weaknesses, God, in His amazing grace, told us that we were to be a family who would reach other families, training those families to be a family to reach other families, and that we would do all of this through participation in international missions. He told us that we would teach people about the greatest commandment - loving God passionately and loving others compassionately - and that we would have the opportunity to bring justice to those who faced injustice. In sum, we would have a family ministry and we would work as international missionaries. With those thoughts in mind we began a two-year journey across four continents with our three children in tow: Tanner (9), Keaton (7) and Regan (4). When we started the journey they were 7, 5, and 2! God took us on a whirlwind of travel, living out of suitcases for 2 years, sleeping as a family in some 30 locations, flying on 40 different airplanes over 60,000 miles, and sharing the gospel as missionaries in England, the Philippines, and South Africa. We really didn't know at the time why we were doing all we were doing, but we knew that each step was the step God has asked us to take. So, we took each step, one at a time, by faith. The steps were typically only months at a time, and we had no idea what would happen as each step came near its end - one month here, three months there, five months there and so on. It was wonderful, hard, crazy, chaotic, and lovely all at the same time. We saw amazing growth in our family, our children, and in our marriage. We saw 100s of people begin to follow Jesus in faith. And we saw our family inspire other families along the way to take steps of faith. We have been so blessed by God simply by putting one foot in front of the other by faith in God's vision for us.
And, now, we have realized where it has all been leading. We still don't know how long this next step will last or what lies beyond this step, if anything, but we are very excited. We now understand how FJ Ministries will do both international missions and family ministry. FJ Ministries will organize short-term mission trips for families. These won't be your typical mission trips. These family journey outreaches will be all that a mission trip normally is PLUS. They will be like a Survivor Trip for the Family, but Survivor with God's purpose at heart.
Survivor where what will outlast and survive will be your family. What is a typical mission trip? A mission trip is an opportunity for a follower of Jesus to go into another culture to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. This can be done in a variety of ways, but generally we have done this relationally in homes, sharing what Jesus did by dying on the Cross; we've done it by serving the poor and needy just as Jesus did by giving food and meeting other needs through acts of service; we've distributed bibles in native languages; we've shared in churches, schools, on streets, performing dramas and dances; and we've held first aid clinics and the like. Sometimes we just pray with and for people. A "typical mission trip" or "outreach" provides a follower of Jesus an opportunity to take their gifts and passions to the Nations, seeing a culture and poverty like they've never seen, and be transformed by obeying God's call to missions. For me they've helped me see Jesus in the least of these, giving me a deeper love for others and a greater desire to show people the Way to relationship with the Father. So, that is a short definition of a mission trip. But, remember, I said we were going to do a mission trip PLUS! Because these mission trips are going to be designed for the family, whether traditional family or otherwise, meaning that children will be invited as valuable participants in the outreach and ministry, we are planning on doing focused discipleship training for the family and ministries designed to utilize every member of the family. What this means is that a typical day of one of FJ Ministries' outreaches will be a morning filled with worship, prayer and intercession, and focused teaching on God's heart for relationship, His Father heart, His heart for family, marriage, and parenting, the effects of generational sin, blessing, and curses and the like. This will not only provide focused discipleship training to those on the outreach, preparing them for their ministry on outreach, but it will also be a part of strengthening their family for the long haul. This is the "family camp" component. The afternoons will be filled with ministry opportunities. Some days will involve ministries intentionally designed for the family to do together or to do with other families. This might look like door to door evangelism, where kids and parents will be side by side presenting personal testimonies and stories to people who need to get to know Jesus or praying with Christians to encourage them. It might be the first time a child has ever heard his dad's personal stories about how God has changed his life. Another family ministry might be going to an orphanage or creche to share Jesus with the children and workers. And, all of the above can and will involve meeting the needs of people along the way through giving and acts of service.
Other days will involve ministries where parents and children can go separate ways. An outreach leader would organize the children to perform drama and dance and go into a local school where they would be kids teaching kids about Jesus. Or perhaps the kids would all spend a day preparing the food for the entire outreach or preparing and distributing food for street kids. Meanwhile, Mom and/or Dad could go out to a remote village to share God's love there. All of these activities would be the international missions component.
From start to finish every aspect of the outreach would be designed with strengthening the family in mind. And, as we have discovered, following God's call to the Nations brings families together like nothing else. Just to illustrate this with an analogy, how often do you hear someone share a favorite childhood memory and it involves something the entire family did together like go on a camping trip. This memory stands out more than the trip to Disney or the beach. It may have been a difficult time, with rain and bad food, but it still was a memory that lasted and that gets talked about at every family gathering. Now, take that camping trip cross-culturally and do it for the Kingdom of God and see what will be written in your family journal of memories. Just this week I was listening to Family Life Today and the guest speaker was one of the creators of the new movie " Fireproof." He explained that his team had spent six months after Facing the Giants seeking God's will for their next production. God spoke clearly to them to focus on marriage. I see God's desire for us to focus on marriage cutting across all aspects of our society and all around the world. When we were in Africa this summer we saw the impact of a nation being practically fatherless. It is no accident that the bible begins with a marriage (Genesis 2:4-25) and ends with a marriage (Revelation 19 to the end). God consistently demonstrates His heart for relationship and showed us through His life on earth that love is the greatest of all things. We will lay out more details in the very near future because the first outreach opportunity for families will take place in the Summer of 2009. We would love to hear from anyone who has an interest in participating, whether as a host, a helper, a leader, a teacher, a participant, or a sender by donating to the outreach. We believe this will be the first of many such outreaches as families are forevermore transformed by the power of participating in going to the Nations. Please pray for us as we step out by faith in this vision God's given us. Dear
Faithful Friends,
It
is my pleasure to have a turn writing to tell you how God is using the Riley
family here in the United
Kingdom.
Bryan
normally writes our letters, and he always is careful to communicate both of
our thoughts. I will try to do the same. I am thrilled to have settled in here at the
King’s Lodge after such an interesting way of making it here. It does seem I appreciate the opportunity all
the more. Please take time to read the
enclosed newsletter from The King’s Lodge as it reports on our trip to the Philippines last year and provides a flavor (flavour
in England)
of what is happening here!
I
am very thankful for our 3-bedroom flat on the 3rd floor of this old
boy’s boarding school. We even have a
private (tiny) bathroom and kitchen. I
have never lived in (how do I say it tactfully?) a place that has so much
history, and it is an adjustment for me.
J
The
kids and I have a full day of homeschooling activities. We are having a great time of learning
together and learning how to learn all together! Living in the main building gives us many
opportunities to participate in the daily events at The King’s Lodge. The children attend the weekly worship
service and social events. Part of our
job (here and everywhere) is to model a Christ-centered marriage and family for
the students, many of whom come from dysfunctional family unites. This at times can feel uncomfortable, as we
truly are in a fish bowl most of the time, but it is great accountability for
our relationship and parenting! It feels
like we are house parents in a sorority/fraternity house, and it frees us up to
raise our kids in a godly way and attend staff meetings that occur
frequently. Tanner is responsible enough
now to be “in charge” for an hour of school while we both attend a
meeting.
As
for Bryan, he
has his work cut out for him! He keeps
busy researching grants and funding opportunities for The King’s Lodge to
increase the building fund. TKL plans to
build on to the existing building and renovate other portions of it. Given a living community of 150+ people, our
current space needs expanding. He meets
with people from this area, places many phone calls and emails and will write
grant proposals. He also is helping TKL
get in compliance with the disability laws and will continue in this role even
as we staff the Crossroads
Discipleship Training
School beginning in April.
The
kids participated in an “Olympic games” night with some very creative DTS
students dressed like athletes from the 80s.
We also attended a surprise birthday party put on by several Canadian
students where they created a French café atmosphere. It was hilarious and fun. C'était amusement!
God
is working diligently in our lives and at The King’s Lodge. So many exciting things are happening for the
Kingdom of Christ.
I am constantly amazed at the testimonies we hear each week of how God moves
around the world. There is currently a
team in Albania, and two
teams just returned from Bosnia
and China. Another team leaves in three weeks for Turkey. This summer there will be teams headed to China, South
Africa, England
and most likely the Philippines. And, excitingly, you can join any of these
teams beginning in July! We will be
providing more and more details about this, but we ask you to begin praying
seriously about whether God might have you participate! Write or call for more
info, too!
I
cannot thank you enough for your prayers and support. I am humbled by your commitment and so
honored to get this opportunity to serve Jesus, the risen King, in this
way. May we be worthy of His
calling. We can be reached by phone at
(011) 44 2476378560. Easy Int’l calling
cards at Sam’s!
With
love from Bryan, Tara, Tanner, Keaton and Regan!!!

Saturday, 16 February 2008 |
Dear Ones, January 17 - February 14 were not at all what we expected. For those who do not know, on January 17th we arrived in the Birmingham, England International airport to learn that we needed different visa documentation. What this meant for us was five hours detention at the airport (after 15 hours of flights), fingerprintings, and a three-day entry prior to being flown back to the U.S. Because we rented our home to friends who just returned from the mission field, we moved in with Tara’s parents for 25 days and completed everything we needed to make our return. So, instead of beginning our work at The King’s Lodge over the past month we have travelled about 14,000 air miles, 1500 driving miles, been on 9 flights, slept in about 6 different locations, been in 4 different countries and been fingerprinted 3 times. As I prepared to write this letter I read this wonderful passage of scripture from Romans 5: Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
We rest in knowing that God, who is always faithful, prepared our path and paved the way for us. As written above we know he is growing our perseverance, character, hope, and love. We were able to visit with friends we hadn’t seen in years in Kansas City as a part of obtaining our visas and we were told by many women in Tara’s Bible Study that God had spoken to them that He had protected us from something in England. We also now are intimately familiar with the process of obtaining entry into the United Kingdom and feel much better equipped at helping lead others through such processes. Finally, we found a fantastic travel agent, Eldo Miller, who helped us find our five tickets back to England for $1100 cheaper than we could. They specialize in missions and international adoptions and can be found at http://goldenruletravel.com/. We recommend him. We also were able to sell my car! Here’s how you can pray for us: - At the end of this month Bryan plans to travel to the Philippines to help prepare for the outreach that will take place there during the summer. Pray for his safety and finances for the trip.
- Beginning in April we will be extremely busy from sunrise until late in the evenings as the next Crossroads Discipleship Training School begins. We will help lead this training course, the first training course for all aspiring YWAM missionaries. Then, we will take this group and others (hopefully some of you) to the Philippines and/or South Africa in July and August for outreach.
- Financial Support - we receive about $2300 monthly, which is what we need for food and lodging in England (for those who know that is a very good price for England), but it doesn’t cover extra expenses that a family of five incurs, such as insurance, clothing, savings, travel expenses (such as five airline tickets) or even things like accounting fees for our ministry.
- Tara will begin homeschooling all three children for the first time. She also will work in administration for The King’s Lodge. Pray for organization, wisdom, and patience. Pray also that our kids will be compliant and teachable!
Much love from the Rileys! Bryan, Tara, Tanner, Keaton & Regan FJ Ministries |
